Day 7 of 30 Days of SPECTRE!

SPECTRE is Daniel Craig’s 4th outing as James Bond 007. Today’s episode is dedicated to the man himself, how his performance has evolved since Casino Royale and how this film compares to the other Bond actors 4th films.

In addition we respond (quite passionately) to the negative SPECTRE reviews coming in from the US.

  1. Agree about the negative reviews. I think what’s going on is a bit of a cultural difference in contemporary film. The tough, gritty film is still very popular – people still compare Daniel Craig’s Bond to the Nolan Batman series, there’s a bunch of gritty comic book films coming out soon, etc. So people are still in the mindset that Bond has to be gritty, and Spectre is a return to the classic Bond. People are shocked at the initial change and saying it sucks, but over time will accept it. It’s like whenever Facebook or Twitter changes their UI: people will hate all over it simply because it’s different. But after some time, they get used to it.

  2. For my one-time cinema experience so far: Daniel never looked so cool! Haven’t felt this about his 007 since ‘Casino’, almost ten yrs ago~ Coolness without pretentiousness, or ‘over-compensation’, very difficult to achieve in a modern setting (imo that’s where the last outing ‘fall’) This Bond strikes the perfect balance between being both cool and cruel, which is just so Fleming. Same director, almost the same writing team.. Everything just came together in this one! Still trying to figure out why.. At least for me, that is =)

    *just check RT on details, how those guys’ rate their ‘tomato freshness’, currently at 60-70’ish % ??? Come on..

  3. I’ am not surprised that the american viewing public are not wowed. The franchise had decided to return to some of the humor the British audience is used to seeing in the classic bond films. i was reading the same forbes article. which also mentions that the Hinx character reminds us of the two silly Henchmen from previous bond films Jaws and oddjob. I was so upset after reading this nonsense. the same article went back and forward’s praising the action and the locations, in my opinion tom and chris most of the people writing these american reviews on ”SPECTRE’ are not James Bond fans period. ”SPECTRE” was made with the DIE-HARD fan like you and many more people like myself. saying that ”SPECTRE” is the worse bond film in History, is a negative review by a person who has no idea the difference of camp and traditional James Bond one liners. However in my mind Sam Mendes And Daniel Craig Has made the best bond movie of our times. love the 30 days of ‘SPECTRE’ tom and chris.

  4. i have said it before and will say it again! The film itself is AMAZING and FUN and THE best time you will have in the Cinema ALL YEAR! BUT: THAT twist on a certain character’s motivation and the rushed final act DO spoil the result overall. But Daniel is amazing as ever. For 25? wish they could retcon the retcon and merge the tones a bit: NOT to Die Another Day levels of muddle but just like the old ones where the film starts with a small / ‘realistic’ mission and then GOES big, logically? In any event these are exciting times for the series and all options on the table! Keep up the good work fellas. ‘Lovely Stuff’. Now..Spartacus and corn beef sandwiches and a VERY Dirty Martini for my Birthday 😉 x

  5. To say it’s too much like a Bond film is like saying The Force Awakens will be too much like a Star Wars film. Insanity.

  6. Went through my second viewing today. I have to think that only time will determine SPECTRE’s place in the Bond cannon but I still found it amazing though the ending felt a bit longer. I’d like to share other quips i had with the movie:
    1) A lot of the scenes were shot really dark, specially the ending. I wish we could have seen London a bit clearer as in Skyfall. Overall I admired Roger Deakin’s work a lot more than Hoyte van Hoytema’s.
    2) I still can’t figure where Bond could sitll an airplane while at a mountain’s peak and how he was able to take off.
    3) At the very end, instead of having Bond come down on an elevator to pick the DB5, I would have had Q arriving in his office only to find another bottle of champagne,and the next shot seeing Bond going into the sunset on the DB5.

    And here’s another reference to a previous Bond that I found. when Bond and Madeleine arrive at Blofeld’s liar in Morocco, a waiter asks Bond to place his gun on a tray. All that remained was for him to say “keep the change!” (Live and Let Die).

  7. Gentlemen, I’ve really been enjoying the 30 Days of Spectre broadcast. I’m on the way to see Spectre for the second time today, at the historic Chinese Theater in Hollywood, now an IMAX screen.

    I enjoyed Spectre, seeing a strong confident DCraig as Bond. The supporting cast was great. I had two issues: The first is the music. That was the worst score that I could remember for a Bond film in years. Sam Smith’s title song sounded more like Bond than anything else in the film. They used the theme sparingly and missed a few opportunities to help some of the dodgy action, like Bond in the plane chasing Hinx. The music was so bad, it was distracting. It felt like the composer decided to ignore the legacy of Bond and chart his own course, which is odd, because I thought he did a nice job with Skyfall. Ugh.

    The second problem I had was that from the watch explosion on, the final 20-30 minutes felt rushed and tacked on. I understand the original plan was to have M lead a team of agents into Blofeld’s lair, a’ la YOLT, but Sony killed it because it was too expensive. It didn’t feel appropriately connected to the rest of the movie. To be clear, I didn’t think it was awful, I just felt like it wasn’t a strong conclusion to the film. When Bond races out of Blofeld’s lair, it looked like a first person video game. DCraig had a great attitude, looking pissed off. I wonder if it was Bond being focused on escape or because DCraig was fully aware of the triteness of the scene.

    I know that Mendes originally said ‘no’ to returning and DCraig ultimately talked him into it. The struggle kind of shows this time. Fortunately, Bond is the kind of franchise that can stand a few bumps and still right its course. I think Spectre is a great foundation for what’s to come. I’d love to see a new director and new writer(s) build on what DCraig and Mendes have laid down.
