30 Days of SPECTRE #013: The Rome Car Chase

Day 13 of 30 Days of SPECTRE!

It’s Bond vs Hinx in a killer car chase through the streets of Rome on today’s James Bond Radio. The last time we saw an Aston Martin face off against a Jaguar things didn’t go too well, so today we see if the second go around is any better.

Does it match up to the frantic energy of the Quantum of Solace pre-titles? Does it stand among the best of Bond car chases or is it a stinker? Find out on today’s James Bond Radio.

  1. To start a scandalous rumour and answer a question posed in this podcast, the man in Moneypennys bed is 009.
Extracting his revenge for 007 nicking his DB10

    1. Ooh David, we like your way of thinking!! We should definitely go with that. Let the rumour mill begin!

Apparently 009’s name is Eric Bryce so there we have it… the culprit laid bare! 😉

  2. For all the slick beauty that is the Aston Martin DB10 … How amazing does that C-X75 look. Oh. My. Gawd!!!

I would have loved to see more impact-action in the chase scene, and ideally, both cars should have gone into the water, Hinx relentlessly hunting Bond, escaping the flooding Jag, swimming to the Aston, only to find James missing, and then cut to the parachute landing.
Hinx isn’t the type of guy that stops.

  3. I LOVED the car chase. Yeah, I can see why some people say there should be more jeopardy or the cars should have been banged up more, but it never took me out of the film. Plus, I think the focus on the scene is the exposition when Bond is on the phone with Moneypenny anyway.

As for the surveillance of the phone: it wouldn’t surprise me if a part of the surveillance program Denbeigh runs looks out for key words to make sorting easier. So words that Bond uses with Moneypenny like “Pale King,” “Franz Oberhauser,” “Mr White”, etc. would set off some alert for Denbeigh. Since he’s a Spectre agent, Denbeigh might set it up to look for those things.

  4. I thought the car chase just about scraped through due entirely to the humour. The ‘New York, New York’ moment and Daniel’s final line in the scene both worked for me. The chase just didn’t have one single ounce of tension in it. Even when Bond is hampered by the old guy in the FIAT there’s no sense that Hinx is closing in. It does look stunning though. My first thought about the lack of other pedestrians and motorists was that this was in the early hours of the morning but then that was blown by the final pay-off when Bond has somebody to say his final line to, and there seem to be other people about at that point too. But you just have to look past those points.

Strange about the Denbigh/Moneypenny thing because on my first viewing of the film that was exactly what I thought (that that was Denbigh in bed wit lovely Eve). Only on second viewing did I realise that there was absolutely nothing to suggest that the guy was Denbigh. Maybe it was Moneypenny’s involvement with the matters that were above M in Skyfall that led a certain number of us to think that she’d be involved in extra-curticular matters this time too.

  5. When I saw the SPECTRE trailers and TV spots I was under the impression that when the DB10 destroyed a parked car during the Rome chase, the latter belonged to Spectre and was ocuppied by its opeatives. Had this been the case, I believe this would have made the whole sequence a lot grittier
Overall the chase is fine (I specially like the chorus on the background when Bond and Hinx approach the Vatican) but I wish more suspense had been created at the very end by showing that Bond really had no option but to ditch the DB10 in the river. This could have been achieved by having HInx actually crash against the bridge at the end or what have you.
