30 Days of SPECTRE #014: Rescuing Madeleine

Day 14 of 30 Days of SPECTRE!

We’re looking at the plane vs Land Rovers chase sequence in today’s episode of James Bond Radio. With the snowy Austrian backdrop, the Majesty’s style setting of the Hoffler Clinic and Bond in full on action mode does this sequence go down as a classic in the series or is there room for improvement.

Let’s find out on today’s episode of JBR!

  1. I didn’t have any problems with ‘plane sequence. One of the highlights of the film, post-credits, for me. I certainly didn’t stop to pause on the “How did he…?” questions, because then a lot of the series from Goldfinger onwards could be dismissed with that logic. Some nice touches with nods (almost literally) to Roger and to Jaws. And like most of the rest of the film, visually a real treat.

Yes, I was absolutely geared-up (from my comfy cinema seat!) for ski action. Not just with the obvious location but with the Oberhauser bsck-story too. As for Daniel not being able to ski – had they not seen any of Roger’s ski sequences?!! Presumably they’ve got more at their disposal these days than Roger and his creaky back projection. I think it will be a while before they have a location again that’s so perfect for a ski sequence.

And I agree, Skyfall’s chin-scratchrrs (not a soul aboard the tube train that crashed for instance, or why was Bond presumed desd when no body was found?) just never seemed to be mentioned and every one of SPECTRE’s seems to be a reason for some to not like the new film. All I can think is that from Skyfall to SPECTRE is just a bit of a leap for some in terms of tone rather than a natural gear change. I for one like the dark and broody Bond, as well as the more fun movies within which SPECTRE can now be included. I just didn’t like Skyfall too much…!

    1. While it’s true that there is a fair amount of trickery with the Roger Moore ski scenes, the fact remains that he can ski. At a leisurely, tranquil pace perhaps, but he can. If Daniel really can’t at all, that limits their options considerably.

  2. The one question that’s bothered me ever since I first watched SPECTRE is, where the heck does a plane take-off from a mountain peak? (see the attached picture) I have to agree with you this is not terribly relevant and I loved this sequence almost as much as the pre-titles. Just as the Rome chase, it could have been a bit grittier but overall I found it very exciting and original.
I hope you dedicate 1 of the 30 SPECTRE days to the its cinematography which I found the one truly dissappointing aspect of the film. Unlike you, I was blown away by SKYFALL and one of the reasons was Roger Deakin’s amazing photography which I think is miles ahead of Hoyte van Hoytema’s.Ever since the first SPECTRE TV and trailers came out, I have been most concerened with the picture’s lack of light contratst which was fine in scenes that are meant to be dark and sisnister like the Spectre reunion but make no sense in the plane snow chase discussed today.
Anyway, I think this would be a good topic for discussion, specially when considering that we still have 16 days of SPECTRE left. Otherwise we might discussing the End Titles in not too long!

  3. I for one love this sequence. I think what they get that plane to do is incredible. For me it’s tied with the pre-credits sequence as my favourite action scene of the film.
