  1. Hi Guys. I really wish I could love this film like you two and the rest of the JBR Community but I just can’t get over the daft Austin Powers plot “twist”. It’s unnecessary, doesn’t pay off (Bond doesn’t seem particularly bothered by this), and in my opinion actually diminishes Blofeld. Even if this can be put to one side, where do we see (as opposed to being told about) Blofeld’s immense power and menace? Blofeld is meant to be the ultimate villain but Bond is able to destroy his base and disfigure him so easily it doesn’t even become the climax of the film.

I fear this will be our Diamonds Are Forever: a wasted opportunity to do something special leaving an average movie with great bits (Mexico and the Spectre meeting) but let down by a weak final act.

Still I’m happy you enjoyed it as we all want the films to be a success.

  2. Thanks for the mention chaps. Yeah you did well on the pronociation I’d say. Olufsphere is a contraction of Oluf’s sphere, as in whatever centers around Oluf, which i my nickname. The name is Olufsen, Lars Olufsen. 😉

  3. I’m fond of the Timothy Dalton entries (specially on the terrific “The Living Daylithghts”) but I do have a theory on why he is not as popular as the other Bonds. As portrayed by any of the other actors, 007 has always been a bit of a bastard, he cheats at golf and backgammon, he makes love to Domino (underwater) just before telling her the news about her brother’s death, he steals Faberge eggs from auctions, he prefers affairs with married women, and so on., These are the kinds of things that they never allowed Timothy to do in any of his two movies, perhaps because he just seems to decent for them.
Regarding Blofeld’s lair in SPECTRE, a friend of mine criticized Bond’s escape from there on the grounds that this was just another example of a regular building exploding as if it were an oil refinery, regardless of its nature (much like the hotel in the desert, at the end of Quantum). My theory is that if you have a building populated like a smal city that’s located in the middle of nowhere as well, you most store quiet a bit of fuel in order to make it run.
And fianlly a question, without wanting to get ahead of our selves, do you believe that the 3 minutes Blofeld gives Bond to find Madeleine (on a mine stuck to the wall) are a homage to the the same 3 minutes Bond gave Alex Trevalyan in Goldeneye?

  4. Surprised no one has mentioned the dreadful green screen in the ‘control room’ scene!? Obviously this doesn’t affect the plot and is just one of those “it is what it is” elements of no great importance but I just found it distracting as it looked so ridiculous! Especially for a film of this scale/budget. What’s wrong with building a mini-Ken Adam style set at Pinewood? Other than this great film, first 90 minutes was genuine top 5 material – just a shame about the final hour.
