30 Days of SPECTRE #016: Escaping Blofeld’s Lair

Day 16 of 30 Days of SPECTRE!

In today’s episode we take a look at Bond’s escape from Blofeld’s crater base. This sequence tends to draw a lot of furred brows among the Bond fan community with accusations of it being more John Rambo than James Bond. So join us as we break it down bit by bit.

  1. Yes, the actual escape from the SPECTRE base was probably my biggest problem with this film (which overall I loved). I just thought ’80s Schwarzenegger film’ when I saw it. Great torture scene that precedes it though.

And if they’re going to mine the continuation stories, then I’d certainly look forward to a few scenes from Trigger Mortis making it to the screen in the years to come.

  2. Mostly agree with you about the problems with this sequence, especially when remembering how badly Craig’s aim was damaged at the beginning of “Skyfall” by a mere Uranium Depleted bullet.
The one shot that I did enjoy quiet a lot from the escape comes when Bond aims his guntowards one of the guards who’s at least a couple hundred meters away above these giant stairs, he shoots and you can see the guy falling from afar in perfect synchronization. I bet that took quiet a number of shots to achieve.
I’m attaching another picture of the buildings which roofs’ were climbed by Bond in the pre-title sequence. Notice how close together they are all located, meaning that the shot where Bond jumps from one building to the other was surely achieved by CGI.

    1. Great research. You could be right about the CGI, although the angle of the 1st picture could still be hiding that gap. It would be clearer in a straighter shot. 🙂

      1. I am from Mexico City and also got the chance to work in the filming of Spectre as an extra, right in this location. There is no gap. Thanks!

        1. When I watched, I remembered them inviting people to be extras for that. So great to live there & be a part of it! The crowds & the whole scene is amazing, one of my favorite pre-titles! Cheers!

  3. Agree with your assessment of the escape from Blo’s Base. Being able to do all that with 2 drill holes in his head is Ludicrous. Yet I still liked the film a lot.

I’ve been on media blackout until I’ve seen the film & seeing this episode is a great welcome back. Fascinating insight on the torture scene from Colonel Sun! Blofeld’s dialog in that scene struck me as quite chilling, very interesting to find out where it came from. Once again your knowledge is impressive & humbling.
