JBR Book Club: The Spy Who Loved Me By Christopher Wood (Part 2)

JBR returns with part 2 of our read through and commentary of Christopher Wood’s, The Spy Who Loved Me.

This week we look at a scene (not featured in the film) involving some excruciating penis based torture, making Casino Royale’s wicker chair sequence pale in comparison. We also pay a visit to the Mujaba club and meet a character with exceptionally shiny teeth.

  1. Great podcast guys. I really need to replace my copy of the Wood TSWLM novelization. Great stuff here. Funny enough, I tend to picture Sir Roger’s Bond here somewhat combined with my own imagination of what Fleming’s Bond looked like.
I love the backstory on Jaws. Quite fleshed out.

  2. Listened to the show last night, loved every minute! Ate a chunk of celery tonight, it was difficult…

  3. GREAT show, gents. Love the readings and discussion!

Tommy inadvertently revealed yet another connection between Bond and Spielberg. In Last Crusade Indy shows up at the castle claiming to be a Scottish Lord, to which the butler (played by Vernon Dobtcheff – who BTW plays Max Kalba in TSWLM !! ) replies, “if you’re a Scottish Lord, I’m Mickey Mouse!” Recall Spectre when Bond arrives at the Spectre meeting and his interaction with the guard. “Mickey Mouse” Given that Hinx gets yanked from the train with a scene that is clearly from Spielberg’s Jaws’s barrel scene, I BELIEVE the Spectre scene IS an Easter Egg back to Last Crusade in the form of “Mickey Mouse!”. There.

      1. Thanks Dan. It would be interesting to try to find all of these throughout both sets of works, wouldn’t it?
