SPECTRE doesn’t open here in Mexico until next Friday and man, do I hope you are right!! For me the first viewing of a Bond movie is always the most important and I am yet to change my mind from my initial impression on any of them, no matter how much I initially tried to convince myself that a) “DIE ANOTHER DAY was pretty good until the wave appeared” and b) “QUANTUM OF SOLACE could have been more Bond-like but otherwise was fine”.
Now, the songs are a different matter all together and I think Adele’s SKYFALL was the only one I loved from the very start. That said, I doubt that “Writing’s on the Wall” will grow on me eventually. I love the orchestration but it is just too odd a song.
I’m going to try to include a picture from the Mexico City set on each of your podcasts. Here is the Hotel from where Bond climbs out a window. A couple of curious facts …..#1 The exterior and the interior of the place are two different buildings all together and #2 The hotel is the same one where Q stayed on “Licence to Kill” (though I’m not sure if it is the same elevator that Dalton and Carey Lowell used, as they have 2 different ones there.
Also notice how different the concrete, collapsing building looks in real life (to the very left) . I supposse they had to add the crest-top facade for it to be a menace to Bond when it falls on him.
During the filming here in Mexico I ran into Barbara Broccoli a couple of times and as nice as she seemed, when these people are on the job, they are too way focused to be social. I did find Michael G. Wilson wondering around the helicopter set taking pictures so I approached him,, shook his hand and tried to have a conversation, but all he replied that he couldnt’ hear a thing with the helicopter’s motor going. Anyway, I’m still at awe that I got to se them.
At any rate, I have great confidence in your judgement so I have to think SPECTRE is as termendous as I expect. Friday can’t come soon enough.
Hi Gerardo,
Thanks for your message and the great picture of the hotel and in Mexico City. It’d be great to hear your thoughts, particularly of the scene in Mexico once you’ve watched SPECTRE.
Amazing that you got to meet Barbara and Michael… both absolute legends!
Hope next Friday arrives quickly for you! 🙂
Cheers,
JBR
Many thanks! It’s going to be hard not being able to listen to your podcasts until Friday, but I hope to catch up.
In the meantime, here is a picture of the Hotel’s Interior, filmed at the Gran Hotel de la Ciudad de Mexico which is about 6 blocks away from the yellow building whose facade was used.
Sorry, here’s the picture.
Great new podcasts guys for 30 days of SPECTRE, so glad that I can share my love of this film with you guys as well. Great to hear about the Red Carpet shenanigans – I was so unbelievably jealous of you guys. Maybe I can get involved with James Bond Radio and help you guys out with some bits and pieces (like the review of the Jonathan Ross SPECTRE programme) and I could join you guys for Bond 25’s premiere in the next few years? Have seen the film 3 times already as well since last Monday and I’d go and watch it another 23 times, it’s that good! Anything I can contribute to JBR I would absolutely love to. I honestly thought that I was the biggest Bond fan of anyone I know until your podcast came along! Have sent friend requests to you guys on Facebook as well. Keep up the stellar work. Would love to be able to meet up with you guys at some point and share my thoughts on the series with you.
Hi James,
Glad to hear you loved the film as much as us… it was a real banger of a movie! We’ll be arranging another JBR get together in the new year so once we’ve arranged it all we’ll let everyone know the details. It was great to see everyone chatting Bond with people they’d only just met. Looking forward to the next one.
Thanks,
JBR
