Day 9 of 30 Days of SPECTRE!
It’s time to talk Madeleine Swann on today’s edition of James Bond Radio. From her opening scene at the Hoffler Clinic to driving off into the London sunset in Bond’s DB5 she holds her own throughout. We get a solid backstory that sounds like it’s straight out of Fleming, some impressive pistol skills and let’s face it, she looks BANGIN’ in that dress.

I thought that the Mr White scene was a bit of a nod to Octopussy, when James travels to bring Major Dexter Smythe into custody, but he gives him a chance to take the “honourable way out”
oh very good yes! shame they use it on Mr White..fact is Bond would of course have killed that man quite willingly and probably thought ‘ I don’t give a stuff about your daughter’. Lots of commentators are buying Mr White as a kind of benign Draco character who is dodgy but basically ok. That would be ok but for the insistence in SPECTRE on DIRECT ret con continuity..within THAT universe of preceding films, White is EVIL. As in he actually ENJOYS Bond’s PAIN..Sadly they had to shift that to a n other character..though I suppose one could argue he was always acting under orders to be like that as per his boss…hmmmm..interesting, anyway!
difficult to be objective here as I once dated a girl who looked exactly like Madeline..in fact they even use one of her lines ‘two jameses’ (coincidence, no doubt). But I think the character and the actress are great and rather than kill her or have her turn eeeeevilll in the next one..how about a coda where we see her LEAVE Bond: something previously unsaid in other films but a new take? Then cut to: Bond returns to action in the field in some great epic sequence..as deep down he is less scared of death in the field than he is of pipe and slippers?..;)

I liked Madelein a lot. I think her decision to help Bond and put herself in the line of danger in Morocco fits her character perfectly. After running away from her past for so long, it’s thrown back in her face with the arrival of Bond in her life. With her life in danger, she chooses to face up to what her father was involved in once and for all. I think that plot point really works nicely.
